Annual Buddy Walk is a 1/2 mile walking event during the month of October to celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. More than 270 Buddy Walks will occur throughout the U.S. The Buddy Walk will raise money to support local and national programs, and to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome.
Family Support Meetings are an important part of AUWDI's foundation of service. Families, self-advocates, and care givers can mingle and share with each other at these meetings. Folks will also hear from individuals or professionals in our community who are interested in improving the lives of people with Down syndrome. Child care is provided at our Family Support Meetings.
New Parent Packets offers accurate information and help to new parents whose babies are diagnosed with Down syndrome. The program provides a call list of contacts to help parents deal with the many questions, flood of emotions, and fear that can seem overwhelming. Parents are given age-related materials like growth charts and a health check list and equally important stories of hope and courage to help light the path ahead. New Parent Packets are distributed of to area hospitals and doctors.
Teen & Young Adult Group organizes social activities that are suitable and for teens and young adults with Down syndrome or other intellectual disabilities. Contact Terrie Willis 205-901-1945 to learn more.
Outreach & Education about Down syndrome is provided to anyone who is interested. A representative from our group will speak to groups or organizations about Down syndrome upon request.
Scholarships are awarded to Members and their families to attend area Down Syndrome conferences.
